Dear Diary is a series that gives the author's impression of a game as they are playing it. It doesn't look to give an overall evaluation but rather their emotions as they are feeling them. Dear Diary entries will probably include spoilers!
Diary Entry 1: Thursday 6th December 2018
23:46: I never got a chance to play the Doom or Quake games as a youngster, but I recently played through the original Quake to see what all the fuss was about. To my surprise, it holds up well and was so fun to play through; I was shocked that some of the best things that Quake does are now lost in modern first-person shooters. I can't imagine how fun this game was back in the 90's. Anyway, enough babbling! I recently read about a game called Project Warlock that had similar graphics to the old Doom and Quake games, and today it launched on Steam. There's almost 2 hours to kill until The Game Awards start which is the real reason I'm awake so late, I treated myself to Project Warlock, a game to kill the time while I wait.
23:50: It didn't take long to install. The menus look nice and the music sounds great. It's loud though, better turn that down, I'm trying to watch Sweet Anita's stream in the background! Double dunk.
23:53: I don't have a reticle for aiming. Did Quake have a reticle? Maybe it didn't. This is like playing the original Gears of War again, blind firing the sniper rifle, hoping to get lucky and hearing your friend's head pop.
23:56: I just spent a minute trying to figure out how to press a switch on the wall. It doesn't give any kind of hint, but then I figured, why don't I just check the keybinds menu? The interaction button is 'space'. It released a bridge and now I'm in a room where I can upgrade spells and weapons, it's not very explanatory though.
00:05: Yep, Just like Quake. Every time you die you have to start the level over again. The problem is, when you die a certain amount of times (3 for Standard difficulty), you have to start from the beginning of the game again.
00:10: Okay, I've got to the Workshop again (the place where you can purchase spells and upgrade your weapons) but my progress from the last playthrough hasn't stuck, which makes it even more annoying. Every time I lose 3 lives I have to start from scratch?
00:16: I'm already further than I got last time, and I'm enjoying it again. I died as soon as I wrote that down, still 2 lives left though.
00:28: This game got significantly better since I found the pistol. It's a rollercoaster of emotions. I started out loving this game, then soon started really disliking it. Now I'm back to loving it. I've just started finding SMG bullets, so hopefully I'm not too far from finding one!
00:32: I've upgraded my pistol, now it sets people on fire! And I just picked up a crossbow. I'm packing like Rambo now. I only have one life left though, and I'm scared that when I die I have to go back to not having a pistol and hating the game again. God damn it!
00:34: Oh wow, I realised you can charge the staff up to do a more powerful shot. It's things like this that the game really doesn't explain. And after the first level I bought a spell upgrade, some kind of illumination that lights up dark areas but I've not found a reason to use it yet. So either I've missed something, or the game just lets you purchase that too early when there's no use for it.
00:45: This game feels significantly easier now, the attacks are quite predictable. That's not to say I'm not enjoying it, I'm loving it, but it's way easier than I initially thought. I've just found a shotgun and now it feels like Quake!
01:08: So it got to the point where I'm on about level 9 and the game is fairly easy so I kept killing myself to see if the game would restart itself. Turns out it did and now I'm not sure I can be bothered to start again. Good game, but it gets repetitive fast. It's now time for The Game Awards!
Diary Entry 1: Sunday 9th December 2018
10:55: I didn't end the last diary on a very positive note, but I've been thinking about this game a lot recently and had the urge to jump back into it. So I'm doing just that.
11:02: Okay, I thought this game would be easy because I felt like I was getting pretty good towards the end of the last session, turns out it was the guns that made it easy.
11:14: The staff in this game is terrible, I'm hoping you can upgrade it so that it actually becomes decent. This game is way easier if you just run around with the axe until you find the pistol.
11:17: I was spam shooting the staff, and I hit a hole in the wall, finding a secret little room full of loot! I hate secrets in games, do I now just run around shooting every wall or just pretend like secrets aren't really there?
11:19: I was shooting the door at the end of the level, I ran out of bullets and the game decided that pulling out dynamite as my next weapon would be a good idea; I threw the stick of dynamite and blew myself up...
11:23: It happened again! I don't know whether I'm annoyed at myself because I keep dying to the same stupid mistakes, or I'm annoyed at the game because it thinks smart swapping to dynamite when you're out of ammo is the wisest thing to do.
11:59: This is a really fun game and I'm enjoying playing it. But it takes so long to progress through the game as well as the game being huge, motivation isn't high to start again when you lose all your lives. I know, I know, git gud! I've got a busy Christmas period coming up where I'm planning on playing through Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate so I must put down Project Warlock for now but for £10 I've had a lot of fun and will definitely come back and finish this game. The aesthetics are amazing, and it's nice to see someone straying away from following the norm of the industry and doing their own thing.
